Signs your roof needs attention

Roofs rarely fail all at once. These are the early warnings worth acting on, before water reaches the timbers, the insulation and the ceilings below.

  • Damp patches indoors

A stain on a bedroom ceiling or down a chimney breast is often the first sign of a leak, even when the roof looks fine from the street.

  • Slipped or missing tiles

Tiles or slates in the garden or the gutter after a windy night mean there is a gap somewhere above.

  • Daylight in the loft

If you can see light through the roof from inside the loft, rain can get in the same way.

  • A dipping or cracked ridge

A ridge line that sags, or has gaps in the mortar along the top, wants looking at before the ridge tiles work loose.

  • Overflowing gutters

Water pouring over the gutter in heavy rain means a blockage, a sag or a broken joint, and it soaks the walls below.

  • Blisters on a flat roof

Bubbles, splits and puddles that sit on a flat roof after rain mean the covering is starting to fail.

How to get a free roofing quote

Whether it is a single slipped tile or a whole new roof, the first step is the same. Here is how it works.

  1. Tell us about the roof

Call 07748 775652, email, or send the form, saying what the problem is and where the property is.

  2. Add photos if you can

Pictures help us understand the job. Take them from the ground or a window: never climb onto a roof to get a photo.

  3. Get your free quote

We arrange a time to look at the roof, then give you a free quote with honest advice on what it needs.

Do you cover Marlow?

Yes. Marlow is at the centre of the area we cover, along with Marlow Bottom, Bourne End, Cookham, Henley-on-Thames, High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Maidenhead and the other places on our coverage page. If your town or village is not listed, call 07748 775652 and ask.

Do you give free quotes?

Yes, quotes are free. Call 07748 775652, email weathershield0087@yahoo.co.uk or send the form, saying what the problem is and where the property is, and we will arrange to look at the roof and talk you through the options.

Can you help with an emergency roof leak?

Yes. Weathershield offers a 24-hour call-out for emergencies such as a sudden leak or storm damage: call 07748 775652. While you wait, move anything valuable away from the drip, catch the water in a bucket, and never go up onto the roof yourself.

What roofing materials do you work with?

On pitched roofs we work with concrete and clay tiles and with slate, along with lead flashing and dry ridge and dry verge systems. On flat roofs we work with felt, rubber (EPDM), fibreglass (GRP), single-ply membranes and hot melt, and we also repair metal roofs. Which suits your roof depends on the building, the pitch and the budget, and we explain the options when we quote.

Should I repair my roof or replace it?

It depends how widespread the problem is. A few slipped or cracked tiles, a loose ridge or a failed flashing can usually be repaired on their own. When tiles are failing across the whole roof, the underlay has perished or the battens have rotted, a new roof is often better value than repeated repairs. We look at the roof and tell you honestly which it needs.

How long will the work take?

It depends on the job and the weather. Replacing a few tiles is often a short visit, while a new roof takes longer, because the old covering has to come off and the new one go on in dry spells. We tell you how long we expect the work to take when we quote, and keep you updated while it is under way.

Do you remove moss and clear gutters?

Yes. We clear moss from roofs, and clean out blocked and overflowing gutters and downpipes. If the gutters need repairing or replacing, or the fascias behind them have rotted, we can do that as well.

Do I need planning permission to replace my roof in Marlow?

Usually not. Re-roofing with similar materials is normally treated as repair work and does not need planning permission, as long as the shape and height of the roof stay the same. Listed buildings and conservation areas are different, and the centre of Marlow is a conservation area, so check with Buckinghamshire Council first. Building Regulations are a separate matter: they normally apply when more than half of a roof is re-covered, when the new covering is much heavier than the old one, or when the structure is altered.
